Dialysis

Dialysis is the treatment used to clean the blood of waste and excess fluids to restore chemical balance in the blood when the kidneys cannot do so on their own. There are two types of dialysis: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Both are offered at Saint Francis Hospital. Your physician will help you decide what type of dialysis is best for you.

Dialysis can help you feel better and live longer, but it is not a cure for kidney failure. Once you start dialysis, you will need to continue it. If your needs change later, you and your physician can switch types of dialysis.

Whichever type of dialysis you and your physician choose, it is very important that you participate in the dialysis program as often as your doctor recommends. Following your treatment schedule will allow you to stay as healthy as possible and feel better.
