A breast prosthesis is an external silicone breast form that looks and feels
like your natural breast. Breast forms come in a variety of sizes and shapes.
With proper fitting, a prosthesis promotes a natural look in clothing and
provides proper balance and weight helping to prevent back pain.
Breast prostheses, mastectomy bras, and other garments for women who have had a
mastectomy, lumpectomy, biopsy, or congenital abnormalities, may be purchased
from Saint Francis Breast Prosthetic Service, located in the Saint Francis
Breast Center in the Natalie Medical Building at 6475 South Yale, Suite 410,
Tulsa.
While the usual recommended post surgical waiting time before being fitted with
a prosthesis is four to six weeks, your doctor will determine when it is time
for you to be fitted with a breast prosthesis, and will write you a
prescription at that time.
A certified fitter will help you decide what style, shape, and color breast
prosthesis is best for you. A wide variety of breast forms and bras are
available, including swim forms and camisole tops for post-operative patients
and patients undergoing radiation therapy.
Most insurance companies cover breast prostheses and related garments. Medicare
also has allowables for breast prosthetics and garments.
Appointments are available Monday through Friday and may be made by calling
494-9270.
