Prebiopsy Localizations of Lesions

Surgeons cannot always feel the suspicious areas revealed on a mammogram. To assist the surgeon in finding the exact place to take a tissue sample, the radiologist performs a localization procedure just prior to sending the patient for an excisional breast biopsy.

First, breast X-rays or an ultrasound examination are performed to assure the suspicious area is still present. If it is, the radiologist uses either X-ray mammography or ultrasonography to place a wire into or next to the lesion to direct the surgeon to the lesion.
