Preparing Your Child for the Hospital

This hospital admission may be your child's first time away from home. We encourage you to pack personal items that he or she associates with home, such as a favorite pair of pajamas, stuffed animal or toy, toothbrush or blanket. If possible, let your child participate in packing for his or her hospital visit to make them feel more involved.

Talk to your child about any fears, but always be honest. Your child needs to trust you and those caring for him or her, so be assured that the nursing staff will provide explanation in ways both you and your child will understand. Always feel free to ask questions.

The Children's Hospital at Saint Francis offers tours and educational programs for children before their stay in the hospital or before a medical procedure. To find out more about these services, call the Child Life Specialist at 918-502-6333.
