In terms of distinctive “firsts,” cardiology specialists from Saint Francis Hospital completed Oklahoma's first angioplasty, a procedure that uses a balloon catheter to open narrowed arteries and performed Tulsa's first heart transplant in 1993. We were also the first in the state to use the drug, streptokinase (a medication used in some cases of heart attack). Saint Francis cardiologists participated in national cardiology studies of tPA, a drug that dissolves blood clots and decreases the risk of heart attacks.

More than 3,500 cardiovascular catheterizations are performed each year at the Heart Hospital at Saint Francis. Our Outpatient Cardiac Rehab program teaches recovering cardiology patients how to incorporate healthy habits into their daily lives through a wide range of wellness classes and medically-supervised exercise programs.

In addition to our patients’ health, we are dedicated to the public health of the Tulsa community. The Heart Hospital at Saint Francis offers assistance to local cardiology patients through our Remote Cardiac Monitoring network. This allows technicians and nurses to monitor cardiovascular patterns of patients in numerous Oklahoma hospitals via telephone lines and respond with appropriate treatment.
