Social Services Department

Because the experience of a terminal illness is stressful to both the patient and family, social work services are available to help in the following ways:

  • Work with various community agencies to provide needed assistance and services to the patient and family
  • Provide and augment professional counseling services to patients and their families or significant others with the goal of enhancing the individual’s ability to cope effectively with the emotional stresses associated with illness and death
  • Assist the patient and family to understand, accept and follow medical recommendations for care of the patient
  • Assist patients and families in dealing with personal and environmental difficulties that interfere with obtaining maximum benefits from palliative care
  • Provide information and assistance regarding advance directives and other legal documents related to end-of-life issues
  • Act as a consultant to other hospice program personnel
