Don’t let a pulmonary disorder leave you short of breath. Any disease process that involves the lungs or the respiratory tract is considered a pulmonary disorder.
Common Pulmonary Conditions
• Pulmonary fibrosis
• Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)/emphysema
• Thoracic surgery
• Pulmonary hypertension
• Lung transplantation
• Restrictive lung disease
Services offered by a pulmonologist include pulmonary function testing and flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FFB). Pulmonary function tests are non-invasive and are used to measure the amount of air moving in and out of the lungs, at what speed the air moves, the size of the lungs, how much air the lungs can hold and how well the lungs function in taking oxygen from the air. An FFB allows pulmonologists to look inside the lungs with a fiberoptic scope. This more invasive procedure is not surgery, but does require sedation. These tests are used to obtain an accurate diagnosis and to assist in treatment planning and lung health maintenance.
