Breast reconstruction is a procedure which builds a new breast or restores a breast to near normal shape after breast cancer surgery. Breast reconstruction can be completed immediately following surgery (immediate reconstruction) or at a later date (delayed reconstruction). A rebuilt breast will not have the same sensation and feel as the original breast, but it can help women feel more natural after having a breast removed.
There are many topics to discuss when considering breast reconstruction and being completely candid with the surgeon will help to insure the best outcome is achieved. A client's diagnosis, lifestyle and wishes are all taken in to consideration. Below are just a few items that are discussed during the consultation with Warren Clinic Plastic Surgery.
- What options are available for breast reconstruction surgery?
- Is immediate or delayed reconstruction best for the patient?
- Discuss the patient's medical conditions and previous surgeries, drug allergies and medical treatments, including current medications, vitamins and herbal supplements as well as alcohol and tobacco use.
Dr. Kevin Kunkel and his staff will use this information to evaluate the patient's general health status and any pre-existing health conditions. They will discuss general risk factors as well as any individual risk factors a patient may have. They will also talk to the patient about the recommended course of treatment and any potential complications.
