If You're Having Thoughts of Suicide

What you're feeling matters, and reaching out is a sign of strength. Here are steps you can take today:

  • Talk to someone now. Call or text 988 or tell a person you trust how you're feeling.
  • Put distance between yourself and anything you could use to hurt yourself. Ask someone to hold onto those items for a while.
  • Go to a safe place. Stay with a friend or family member, or go somewhere with other people around.
  • Reach out to Laureate. Call us at 918-481-4000 to talk with our team about next steps.

These feelings can change. Getting support is the first step.

Warning Signs to Watch For

Someone who is thinking about suicide may show changes in how they talk, act, or feel. Warning signs can include:

  • Talking about wanting to die or feeling like a burden to others
  • Saying they feel hopeless, trapped, or see no reason to live
  • Pulling away from friends, family, or activities they once enjoyed
  • Sleeping much more or much less than usual
  • Increased use of alcohol or drugs
  • Extreme mood swings, anger, or agitation
  • Giving away important belongings or saying goodbye to people

If you notice these signs in yourself or someone else, reach out for help right away.

How to Help Someone You're Worried About

You don't need to be an expert to make a difference. A caring conversation can save a life.

  • Ask directly. It's okay to ask, "Are you thinking about suicide?" Asking does not put the idea in someone's head. It shows you care and opens the door to getting help.
  • Listen without judgment. Let them share their feelings. Avoid arguing, lecturing, or trying to fix everything.
  • Help keep them safe. Help reduce access to things that could be used for self-harm.
  • Connect them with support. Call or text 988 together or help them contact Laureate.
  • Stay in touch. Follow up in the days and weeks after. Ongoing connection makes a real difference.

If the person is in immediate danger, call 911 and stay with them until help arrives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to ask someone if they're thinking about suicide?

Yes. Research shows that asking directly does not increase risk. Most people feel relief when someone notices and cares enough to ask.

What happens when I call 988?

You'll be connected with a trained crisis counselor who will listen, offer support, and help you find resources. The service is free and available 24/7 by call, text, or chat.

What if I'm not sure I need treatment?

That's okay. An assessment can help you understand what you're experiencing and what kind of support might help. Reaching out doesn't commit you to anything.

Does Laureate accept my insurance?

Laureate staff can help you verify benefits.

Can I get help for my child or teen?

Yes. Laureate provides outpatient behavioral health care for young people. If you're concerned about your child, call us to talk through your options at 918-481-4000.
