For many Tulsans, a trip to the doctor is out of reach; no insurance, no referral, no clear path to care. For more than 25 years, Xavier Medical Clinic has been quietly dismantling those barriers, one patient at a time.

Care for Those Who Need It Most

Xavier Medical Clinic operates as part of Saint Francis Health System, offering primary care to approximately 1,500 uninsured patients — about one-fourth of whom are children. Physicians volunteer their time, patients receive access to the full Saint Francis Health System, and no one gets dropped from the rolls when a provider moves on.

That kind of continuity matters. Many of Xavier Clinic's current patients were among the very first to be treated there when it opened.

A Clinic That Grew to Meet the Need

When Oklahoma expanded Medicaid in 2020, roughly 450 Xavier Clinic patients qualified for coverage — a milestone that led directly to the creation of Warren Clinic East. That clinic filled so quickly that Saint Francis has since opened three additional Community Access clinics for Medicaid patients.

Even with that growth, demand for uninsured care remains high. Xavier Clinic no longer accepts walk-ins for general primary care and maintains a waitlist for new patients. The limiting factor isn't will — it's the number of volunteer physicians available to see patients.

If You Think You Might Be Pregnant

There is one important exception to the walk-in policy: any uninsured person who believes they may be pregnant can walk into Xavier Medical Clinic at any time for a free pregnancy test. From there, clinic staff will:

  • Help enroll in Soonercare or Soon-to-be-Sooners
  • Schedule a first OB appointment
  • Complete the lab panel needed for that first visit

Spanish-language services are available, including a bilingual nurse, an interpreter and prenatal classes in Spanish — all at no cost.

How to Access Care

If you are uninsured and not currently on the Xavier Medical Clinic waitlist, call the clinic at 918-583-7233. Depending on your situation, staff can add you to the waitlist or connect you with another uninsured clinic in the Tulsa area.

Physicians: Your Time Makes a Difference

Xavier Clinic welcomes volunteer physicians from inside and outside the Saint Francis system. Schedules are flexible and entirely based on your availability — many volunteers come once a month.

Providers within Saint Francis can reach out directly to Medical Director Rose Sloat, MD to get started. Providers outside the system can fill out the volunteer form and questionnaire on the Saint Francis website.

The reward, as those who've done it will tell you, is real. Patients are grateful simply to access care at all — and watching someone's health change for the better is something that stays with you.

If you're a physician looking for a meaningful way to give back, Xavier Medical Clinic is a place where your time and effort go a long way.
