Our Trauma Surgery Program delivers 24/7, physician-led trauma care with a commitment to clinical excellence, compassion and rapid response.

Level I Trauma Center

The Saint Francis Hospital Trauma Center is designated as a Level I Trauma Center, verified by the American College of Surgeons. As a verified Level I Trauma Center, the Saint Francis Hospital Trauma Center has been recognized as providing high-quality care to patients with the most serious, life-threatening injuries. 

This verification also recognizes our trauma center for its extensive resources and skilled personnel, its active involvement in community outreach, trauma education and training, and trauma research, and its increasing capacity.

Who We Are

Our state-of-the-art facilities are designed to handle even the most complex injuries. The Saint Francis Trauma Center features:

  • High-tech surgical suites for advanced procedures
  • A dedicated neuro-trauma-surgical ICU for critical care needs
  • On-site support services, including a robust blood bank, respiratory therapy, rehabilitation services, behavioral health, spiritual support and social work

The Saint Francis Trauma Center consists of a team of trauma care specialists, trained to provide the best care possible. Our team includes:

  • Board-certified trauma surgeons, fellowship-trained in trauma and surgical critical care
  • Experienced advanced practice providers (APPs) who manage day-to-day clinical care
  • Dedicated trauma office staff, including registrars and process improvement nurses who ensure data-driven quality improvement and regulatory compliance

We work in close partnership with expert orthopedic trauma and neurosurgery teams, as well as a wide range of surgical and medical sub-specialists, to provide seamless multidisciplinary care from resuscitation to rehabilitation.

What We Treat

The Saint Francis Trauma Center provides expert care for a wide range of injuries, including:

Injury Prevention and Community Outreach

We believe trauma care starts with prevention. Our program supports and delivers community outreach and evidence-based education, including:

  • Stop the Bleed® – life-saving bleeding control training for the public
  • Tai Chi for Fall Prevention – balance and movement classes to reduce fall risk among seniors
  • Safety programs in schools, senior centers and industrial workplaces

These initiatives reduce injury incidence and empower communities to respond effectively in emergencies.

Trauma Education and Professional Training

Saint Francis is a regional leader in trauma education, offering nationally recognized training programs to prepare healthcare professionals for trauma care excellence:

  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) – for physicians and APPs
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) – for nurses caring for trauma patients
  • Stop the Bleed® Courses – for healthcare and community members alike

Our goal is to ensure every patient in the region has access to providers trained in the latest trauma protocols and standards of care.

Advancing Trauma Care Through Research

Our commitment to trauma care extends to advancing the science behind it. The Saint Francis Research Department supports numerous ongoing projects in both general trauma surgery and orthopedic trauma, including:

  • Outcomes in geriatric trauma
  • Fracture management protocols and timing of orthopedic intervention
  • Quality improvement and process optimization in trauma systems
