A mammogram is a safe, low‑dose X‑ray that gives doctors a clear picture of breast tissue and can detect small changes over time.
Your doctor can help you decide when to begin mammogram screenings and how often you should have them based on your age, health history, and risk factors.

Early Detection with Mammogram Screenings
There are two approaches to mammography—screening and diagnostic tests. Screening mammograms are intended to detect breast abnormalities; diagnostic mammograms are intended to further define those abnormalities and guide treatment decisions.
Digital Screening Mammograms
A screening mammogram is what most women are familiar with. This screening is performed when a woman has no breast examination abnormalities, like new or suspicious breast lumps. These mammogram images are interpreted by a radiologist and the results are reported to you and your physician after your visit.
Digital Diagnostic Mammograms
A diagnostic mammogram is recommended if a problem is detected or if a woman has previously had breast cancer. It may also be used to get quality images in special cases, like breast implants. Generally, diagnostic mammograms take longer than screening mammography and they are read while you wait. This allows the radiologist to request additional images or an ultrasound if needed without the patient having to make another appointment.
