Institutional Review Board (IRB)

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) plays a critical role in ensuring that all clinical research conducted at Saint Francis Health System is ethical, compliant, and protects the rights and welfare of human subjects. The Center for Clinical Research and Sponsored Programs (CCRSP) works closely with both local and central IRBs to support safe and efficient study oversight.

In accordance with federal regulations, including those outlined by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Institutional Review Board (IRB) is responsible for the oversight of all research involving human subjects. Depending on the study and regulatory requirements, research oversight may be conducted through a local IRB, such as an institutional or academic IRB, or through a central IRB that provides oversight for multi-site studies.

The IRB is an independent committee established to review, approve, and monitor research to ensure that the rights, safety, and welfare of participants are protected. Before any research involving human subjects can begin, it must undergo IRB review to confirm that risks are minimized, potential benefits are reasonable, and appropriate safeguards are in place.
